Symbols of Bilbao: the tiles

You walk with eyes straight ahead or down? In any case you will have seen these tiles through the streets of the city.

Bilbao´s  tile has a pattern known rosette type originally manufactured concrete and gravel, covered with steel wool. Currently it´s made with cement .

Used in Bilbao's sidewalks since the old asphalt was replaced. This type of rosette tiles are characterized by flower-shaped grooves and the four channels that drain the rain. The pattern is repeated four times in a two-foot square tile side.

It was designed in the first half of the twentieth century, to satisface the needs of populations with a rainy climate of Bilbao. There are many other similar type rosette tiles of different sizes, some design before Bilbao.

The tile Bilbao was exported to many cities around the world, especially in Spain, Equatorial Guinea and several South American countries such as Argentina.

In the gift shops for tourists, there a lot of souvenirs with the Bilbao´s tile.
